DISCOVER its Art, Roman Ruins & Alpine Flavors

Why Go: This small but lively town is a crossroads between Switzerland, Italy, and France. The result? A mix of cultures, flavors, and history. This area is packed with natural beauty, unique destinations, and satisfying gourmet traditions. The added bonus is that it isn’t packed like the more mainstream spots, so you can enjoy your very own private postcard holiday.

What to See & Do:

  • Fondation Pierre Gianadda – An art museum hosting world-class exhibitions, plus a sculpture garden with works by Rodin and Moore.
  • Roman Amphitheatre – A window into Martigny’s rich ancient past.
  • Barryland – A museum dedicated to the Saint Bernard dog breed (and yes, you can meet the dogs!).
  • Via Francigena Pilgrimage route that links Canterbury in England to Rome via France, Switzerland and Italy.
  • Follatères reserve A natural hiking paradise with a Mediterranean climate, overflowing with a variety of unusual species of animals and plants.
  • Château de la Bâttiaz strategically built in the 13th century to guard the valley and St. Bernard pass, now restored ruins with catapults and cannons. From May to October enjoy an immersive medieval restaurant serving authentic dishes made from local, seasonal ingredients paired with Valaisan wines. Look for the blue flag atop the tower—it means the castle is open.

Where Else to Eat:

  • Café National – Bistronomie à Martigny-Bourg with homestyle and locally sourced Valais cuisine with hearty portions. A memorable meal waits for you in this traditional haven.
  • La Fromatheque – Cheese lovers’ heaven, with fondue and raclette menus. This combination cheese shop and wine bar is the ideal place to taste local products. The Cheese Library, rich in local products, offers a wide variety of cheeses, wines and artisanal specialties. Some of the cheeses offered by the establishment are produced on site (organic sheep, goat and cow).
  • Cafe Restaurant du Midi  A top spot for all things cheese: classic fondues, goat’s or sheep’s milk fondues, oven-baked cheese “Croûtes” and more. Sumptuous Raclette and fondue menu, you’re spoiled for choice between Val de Bagnes, Liddes cheese, and even blue cheese options.
